The Benefits of Herbs and Spices in Vegetarian Slimming

As with any dish, cleverly balanced use of herbs and spices can turn a dreary dish into a gourmet treat. In a Vegetarian Slimming diet, this is absolutely the case.  A person can get so tired of bland food which pulses and vegetables can sometimes be especially if they are out of season.

However there is another very good reason to invest in Herbs and Spices, and that is more to do with the healthy and medicinal qualities of many of our well known herbs and spices.

The first, and one of the most popular ingredients though perhaps neither a herb or a spice is Garlic. It is a wonderful flavour enhancer in countless dishes, particularly Italian, Spanish, and Middle Eastern dishes, but did you know:-

Garlic can lower blood-sugar levels in people with diabetes. It ties up chemical receptors that otherwise would deactivate insulin, the hormone that controls sugar usage, and also stimulates the pancreas to secrete insulin. It does this without stimulating weight gain, a common side effect of many diabetes medications.

Basil Fresh basil leaves are an excellent first aid remedy for warts, insect bites and rashes. The leaves are the source of the antibacterial essential oil which gives basil it’s uplifting aroma, and is the bane of insects as well. This is really handy when you are out tending to the summer garden, and are bitten. Just snip a few basil leaves and rub them on the itch for immediate relief.

Rosemary can withstand longer cooking times, and lends itself well to hearty vegetarian stews. Don’t overdo the quantities though as its a bit of a bully in its flavour.  A few teaspoons of chopped rosemary lends a tangy taste to biscuits as well. Rosemary vinegars are an excellent and healthy way to dress cold vegetables and salads. Even the twigs, stripped of their leaves find use as kindling, and as a aromatic addition to barbecue fires.

Clary sage can be used fresh or in the dried form in pies and is especially good in stuffings.  It has a special affinity with the female system in general and is recommended for women who are experiencing hot flushes, pain and tension associated with menopause, menstrual problems and PMS.

Coriander is a personal favourite of mine.  The leaf is used extensively in salads and the seeds of the flower head is one of the spices used in Indian Cuisine.  It is thought to originate in the Middle East, and dates back to Biblical times, though is now widely used the world over.  It has a high Iron content which is good for curing Anemia.  It stimulates the digestion process and helps to reduce levels of cholesterol in the blood.

Herbs and Spices aid Slimming

Cinnamon is native to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and has an unmistakable flavour. When your blood sugar is constantly spiking from the foods that you are eating, you will be more likely to gain weight or have a hard time losing extra weight that is already present.  Keeping your blood sugar levels in check is an essential element of weight loss.

With a little bit of creativity, there are many ways that cinnamon can be added to your regular meals. Sprinkle cinnamon on your cereal for breakfast in the morning, sprinkle some on a pear, apple, or other fruit for an afternoon snack, sprinkle it on yogurt, or add some to your coffee or tea.

Curry Powder is a mixture of many herbs and spices. The combination of spices used in making curry powder varies in different countries and regions.  A good curry spice mixture should have a good balance of  the different spices and can often be a closely guarded family secret.   It’s use in Vegetarian Cooking can transform a plain vegetable dish into an explosion of delicious flavours.   Medicinally curry powder can help reduce inflammation of the joints, due to the presence of curcumin, a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent.  Curcumin is thought to be effective in prevention of many of our modern day cancers.

Chillies…  a word of warning here; Chilies either fresh or in powder form, can cause severe burning sensations to hands and may cause severe irritation to nasal passages, eyes and throat. Therefore, it may be advised in some sensitive individuals to use thin hand gloves and face masks while handling chilies. Used in moderation and to taste, they can give a vegetarian meal a real zing, by adding instant heat and enhancing other spices used.  Chillies themselves detoxify as they removes waste products from our body and increase the supply of nutrients to the tissues. They also assist in the digestion of food, and have benefits  in lowering cholesterol and also in the treatment of some arthritic conditions.

This is just the tip of the iceberg as far as the range of Herbs and Spices and the Health Benefits that can assist you maintain a Vegetarian Slimming program.
